What does Play to Earn mean - the best games in 2022

Top Play to Earn games in 2023. : Throughout the 50-year history of home video gaming, games have been a distraction, something to take your mind off a hard day's work. But today, a new generation of video games are using blockchain technologies like NFTs to reward players with cryptocurrencies.

In some countries, these Play to earn games already allow players to earn a living by playing video games, with scholarship programs and academies popping up to help players navigate this strange new world.

While some have hailed the advent of play-to-earn games, arguing that they allow users to receive rewards for an activity they previously would have done for free, many gamers have expressed concern about the commerce's unwelcome intrusion into the escapist world of gambling.

What is a Play to Earn game?

Play to Earn or Play 2 Earn (P2E) is simply a business model where users can play a game and earn cryptocurrencies at the same time.

It is a very powerful psychological model because it combines two activities that have driven humanity since the dawn of time: earning money and having fun.

The key element of this model is to give players ownership of certain in-game assets and allow them to increase their value by actively playing the game. Usually in the crypto world, the definition of ownership and even its transfer are possible through the use of non-fungible tokens (NFT).

Today, P2E cryptocurrency games are a popular choice for investors and gamers looking to make a big splash in the market.
Today, P2E cryptocurrency games are a popular choice for investors and gamers looking to make a big splash in the market.

By participating in the game economy, players create value for other players in the ecosystem and for developers. In return, they receive a reward in the form of in-game assets that can appreciate. These assets can be anything from attractive characters that vary in rarity to a certain type of cryptocurrency.

The main idea is that in play to earn games, players are rewarded for putting more time and effort into the game.

This is a relatively new phenomenon in the cryptocurrency market – or at least its popularity has increased only recently, especially with the advent of a particular project, namely Axie Infinity (read the next section ).

Indeed, the play-to-earn gaming model in the metaverse is an emerging market where gamers can monetize the time they spend playing video games. The model is still in its early stages, so it's hard to speculate how profitable this game model will be for players in the future.

How Play to Earn cryptocurrency games work

Axie Infinity has become a hot new gaming company, but not for its mind-blowing gameplay or dazzling graphics. It was the underlying cryptocurrency system and the economic opportunities that emerged on its blockchain that attracted users from around the world.

This success comes despite overcoming hurdles to play the game, including getting a cryptocurrency wallet, buying ether, and then spending over $1 worth of ether to buy the AXS tokens. needed to play.

On the surface, Axie is a Pokémon-like game where you use Axies with various powers to battle against other players. But in the “play-to-earn” model, players earn tokens by winning a battle with their Axies against other players, or by selling them on the Axie Marketplace. These tokens can then be sold for fiat money – real money. But to get an Axie, players have to buy one from the exchange or spawn it from existing Axies.

The play-to-earn model is a business model that allows players to farm or collect cryptocurrencies and NFTs that can be sold on the market. This model represents a new paradigm in the gaming industry as users are financially compensated for playing games.

Axies are themselves NFTs, or non-fungible tokens – unique digital objects verifiable on the blockchain and controlled by individual users. But these NFTs aren't just certificates of ownership attached to pretty JPEGs: they have in-game utility.

Along with the AXS tokens needed to start playing, the game also has SLP tokens, or smooth love potion. Players earn SLPs when they win a match. They need the SLP and AXS tokens to raise their Axies, which can then be sold or raised again.

For years, the question has arisen as to when a user-friendly application of cryptocurrency will become mainstream. There is an argument that NFTs do this for collectibles – see NBA Top Shots from Dapper Labs. But cryptocurrency insiders and investors believe games could become the real winning app.

What is the future of crypto play-to-earn video games?

Remember when Pokemon cards were all the rage? My classmates and I were buying $10 pokemon card packs and keeping our fingers crossed for rare cards (high HP pokemon) to spark envy and crush weaker pokemon in card battles.

The trading card craze is about to make a volcanic comeback in the form of NFT gaming. During my research, I came across Axie Infinity, an NFT game heavily influenced by Pokémon. The basic premise of the game is to form a three-person team of creatures called Axies with various skills and throw them into battle to face off against other opponents.

Axie Infinity is arguably the most popular Play to Earn game today, so of course I wanted to see what it was all about. However, I was immediately put off when I realized I had to buy three Axies to play the game - and they don't come cheap if you want to be a worthy competitor. My wallet shook when I saw the price tags of the most beastly Axies; they cost between $230 and $312 on the market.

Sure, the million dollar sales aren't typical of Axie Infinity, but the business is still amazing, people spend around $200-$400 per Axie to build a battle-ready team. According to CoinGecko, players need at least $690 to start playing Axie Infinity, and the platform just hit one million daily active users in mid-August.

Axie Infinity is making money, but more importantly, we have to talk about how people are investing their hard-earned cash in intangible, funky-looking monsters for some dumb online game. Why ? Investment is the key word here. A survey by CoinGecko revealed that 65% of Axie Infinity players earn at least 151 Smooth Love Potion (SLP) per day. SLP is an Ethereum-based token that can be earned on Axie Infinity. As of this writing, an SLP is worth 14 cents, which means more than half of players are earning $21 a day to help recoup their initial investment.

Play to Earn games aren't just fun and playful, though. For some it is a livelihood. A YouTube documentary recently shed light on the growing popularity of Play to Earn games in less fortunate countries (notably the Philippines). “[Axie Infinity] supported our daily needs, paid our bills and our debts,” said a mother of two who lost her job due to the pandemic. "I was grateful to Axie because, in one way or another, she helped us."

I'm focusing on Axie Infinity here, but I've seen countless other Play to Earn games where people buy expensive NFTs in hopes of making a profit in the long run - and that's not about either. simple trading card platforms.

Upcoming Play to Earn games

A growing number of blockchain projects are moving into the play-to-earn space, including the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT avatar series, which announced an upcoming play-to-earn game in its latest roadmap.

Another major NFT collection with plans for a blockchain game is The Forgotten Rune Wizard Cult, which has announced that it has partnered with metaverse developer Bisonic. The project plans to use a “create-to-earn” model, in which the community will generate custom game lore and NFTs in exchange for rewards. Although the semantics differ slightly, there's no doubt that wizards will be playing in a world where they can own land, collect resources, craft items, mint NFTs, and actually participate in building the virtual world that surrounds them.

Loopify is a renowned NFT collector, writer, and creator who recently tweeted that 2022 will be “the year of the blockchain gaming industry.” He walks the talk by developing the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Treeverse. Reminiscent of classic titles such as Runescape, Treeverse will allow players to trade in-game assets as NFTs, and reward them for playing.

Currently, Treeverse is still in public alpha, with the team continuing to polish the game's art, inspired by the minimalist design of titles such as Journey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Valheim. Just recently, Loopify launched Timeless, a collection of 11 characters that will be distributed for free in Treeverse to NFTrees holders.
