In this Colombian fantasy series, an enslaved 13th-century witch (Angely Gaviria) travels back in time to present-day Cartagena. There she befriends the young artist Johnny Ki (Dylan Fuentes), in whose hostel she is staying. It is only in time, however, that Carmen realizes the grave consequences of the task with which the evil magician Ademar has sent her into the future. Even though the story takes a while to pick up speed, the characters are drawn with charisma and their relationships with each other are extremely entertaining. The fact that the action is set in Colombia also sets the series apart culturally and visually from the American mainstream. The Journey West (2018)
Seen from a Western perspective, the reboot of the cult Japanese series from the 70s looks a bit silly, but it definitely brings a breath of fresh air to the fantasy genre: the Australian production follows a young monk (Chai Hansen) led by a group of gods on a journey through an ancient, fantastical land now ruled by evil demons to collect lost scrolls of wisdom – an action-packed adventure with a great sense of humor.
