Android 12L's key feature for tablets and foldables is the taskbar, but there's a quirk on Samsung devices that disables the taskbar when using a third-party launcher.

Samsung has rolled out Android 12L as part of its One UI 4.1.1 update, bringing Google's latest big-screen features to its foldables and tablets. With this update came the taskbar, which arrived first on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but has since expanded to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Tab S8, and Galaxy Tab S7 as well.

However, a minor side effect of using the Android 12L taskbar on a Samsung device is that the feature is disabled when using a third-party launcher. Options like Nova Launcher or Niagara will disable the enable taskbar option in the settings menu.

Although it's a little frustrating, it makes sense to some extent.

Digging into the Galaxy Z Fold 4's settings, it's relatively easy to get around the greyed-out taskbar toggle in Samsung's version of Android 12L. Go to Settings > Display > Navigation Bar and scroll down to "Looking for something else?" The section contains a shortcut to taskbar settings. Tapping that reveals the option to enable taskbar even if you're using a third-party launcher, but it's pretty easy to see Why Samsung has disabled this option.

A few minutes after using the taskbar on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with Niagara Launcher — one of the few launchers that makes sense with the Fold 4's dual screens — you'll notice that the taskbar still shows up in the multitasking menu and often breaks. , showing no apps. In the day since I first tested this, I've also noticed that the taskbar tends to crash more and more often, requiring toggling the feature on and off to fix it.

In "stock" Android, or at least Pixel phones, Android 12L and Android 13 do not disable the taskbar when using a third-party launcher. On the contrary, it may continue to show the taskbar on the launcher and it may not synchronize the icons on the taskbar with those on the launcher dock.

This seems like behavior we'll see remain for the foreseeable future, but perhaps like issues with navigation gestures and third-party launchers, Android will expand functionality over time.
