Tech companies' desperation to retain their workers has reached such a point that it's increasingly common for them to offer freebies and perks to improve their workplace well-being.

La Start Payflow is the living example of this industry trend: "Depending on seniority, our employees can access a long list of gifts, such as PlayStation Plus or Xbox Gold subscriptions, the Cooltra shared motorcycle service, Spotify Premium, Amazon Kindle or Netflix. . They can even receive prepared meals from Wetaca, play sports in the gyms adjoining the Urban Sports Club or access the framing Gurucall”, explains Benoit Menardo, co-founder of this company specializing in the payment of salaries in installments.

In addition, the company also implements business decision-making processes in a democratic manner with all staff employees. “We asked which aspects were going to change and, of all the measures that are proposed, we committed to implementing some of them”, explains the entrepreneur.

40 million people voluntarily quit their jobs last year to improve conditions in the United States.

In the digital world, teleworking goes without saying. Even some multinationals such as Netflix, Dropbox, Hubspot or VMware allow their workers to have unlimited vacations. Businesses are desperate. And with good reason. The rotation of workers in the sector is 19 months and is closely linked to the completion of a specific project, according to data from the consulting firm Talent Up.

But beyond considering these gifts as a way to retain talent, these services also respond to the growing importance of emotional pay. “A third of our life is spent working, and that's why it's essential to have a good working environment that goes way beyond salary. Since the pandemic broke out, many workers have become aware of this and are prioritizing work-life balance and free time,” explains Paula Arias, co-founder of the Start of human resources Fresh People during a meeting organized by Urban Sports Club. In the United States, the phenomenon is known as the great resignation – more than 40 million people voluntarily quit their jobs in 2021 – while in Spain this trend is starting to spark interest with data showing it is still nascent.

Digital employees work an average of 19 months in a company

In this context, the role of the human resources department is becoming increasingly important. “Historically, it was dedicated solely to administrative management and now it is becoming more and more important in boards of directors. Their role is essential in retaining talent and improving well-being,” says Factorial's Human Resources Director, Mireia Barón.

Technology companies, at the forefront of innovation and trends, are convinced of this paradigm shift. The challenge is to convince traditional companies to change their corporate culture. “Managers must be sensitive to the well-being of workers. There's no point in them implementing apps and services to improve their comfort at work if they don't lead by example later," says Elena Gómez, co-founder of Baby Friendly Companies, alluding to the long working hours that characterize large service companies. .
