How to turn your iPhone keyboard into a trackpad

If you work with text documents on your iPhone or iPad that are longer than a shopping list, you will know very well how frustrating it can be to get the cursor in the right position when editing text.

Most people move the cursor by tapping the screen with their fingertip, trying to place the cursor in the right place for an edit. There's a magnified bubble view of where the cursor is on the screen, but I find that's usually obscured by my numbers.

And as anyone who's tried this will tell you, it gets really frustrating, really fast.

There is an easier way to enable the built-in trackpad.

And it's a simple one-step process:

  1. Press and hold your finger on the spacebar on the keyboard.

You will notice a haptic buzz and see that the keyboard has gone blank, and now you can move your finger on the keyboard, and the cursor in the text will move with it.

When the cursor gets to where you want to drop it, just lift your finger off the keyboard.

The first few times you use the built-in trackpad, it might feel a little clunky, bulky, and weird, but like most things, it gets easier the longer you do it, and it quickly becomes second nature.

Try it today!
